Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq have collectively criticized Israel's recent land seizure in Syria, particularly in areas near the occupied Golan Heights. This condemnation follows Israel's intensified military actions across Syria after the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad.

Qatar Denounces 'Dangerous Escalation'

On December 9, 2024, the Qatari Foreign Ministry labeled Israel's actions as a "dangerous escalation" that undermines Syria's sovereignty and violates international law. They warned that Israel's strategy to create a "fait accompli" by seizing Syrian territory would only heighten regional tensions and violence.

Saudi Arabia Stands Against Israel's Violations

Saudi Arabia echoed these sentiments, criticizing Israel for its ongoing violations of international legal standards and its attempts to destabilize Syria's security and territorial integrity. The Saudi Foreign Ministry called on the international community to denounce these actions, reaffirming that the Golan Heights is recognized as occupied Arab territory.

Iraq Appeals to the UN Security Council

Iraq's Foreign Ministry also condemned Israel's land grab as a serious breach of international law, emphasizing the importance of maintaining Syria's sovereignty. They urged the United Nations Security Council to take action against this aggression.

Israeli Actions in the Buffer Zone

The situation escalated when Israel took control of a buffer zone established under a 1974 ceasefire agreement with Syria. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that he had ordered forces to seize this area shortly after Assad's removal, asserting that the Golan Heights would remain under Israeli control indefinitely. He credited Israel's military actions against groups like Hamas and Hezbollah for contributing to Assad’s downfall.

Escalating Tensions with Airstrikes Across Syria

In addition to the land seizure, Israel has conducted extensive airstrikes across Syria, targeting military installations and airbases in various locations including Damascus and Latakia. The Israeli military typically does not confirm its operations in Syria but has been reported to have executed over 100 airstrikes on military targets following the recent political changes in Syria.

United Nations Voices Concern

The United Nations has also expressed concern over Israel's actions, with spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stating that they violate the agreements established between Israel and Syria regarding the buffer zone. Meanwhile, Israel maintains that its military presence in the area is temporary and necessary for national security due to perceived threats along its borders.
